Deane's Motorcycle Trip In SOUTH AMERICA |
Most difficult day - on the "Road from Hell", in Peru |
Here are some photos from the "Road from Hell" that was so difficult for Deane and three other riders and one passenger, on their motorcycles. "Water Crossings" were sometimes pretty tough, depending on what was on the bottom of the river or creek - in this case large, slick, rocks. There is no other choice - this is the "road". (The guy with the yellow bike and yellow helmet is Deane.)
This crossing lead to a tip-over in this small river. - If you haven't had a tip-over in a river, you haven't had enough fun. How do you get a heavy motorcycle up? - With some help! And yes, it did start right up! Below is another "Water Crossing" that we all negotiated without problems. - (Deane is the guy with the yellow helmet - on the other side, without a tip-over.) And below is a narrow, difficult "road" as part of this day's ride through the back country in Peru. These were the "easy" parts of the road that day. The hardest parts were where large buses and trucks with very large dual wheels had made ruts in muddy and rocky places. Sometimes these ruts were 10 to 20 yards long, 12" to 14" deep, filled with mud, water, and rocks, and just wide enough to fit the motorcycle's foot pegs between the sides. A slight miscalculation in placement of the motorcycle lead to a tip-over. Was it fun? - No - But, was it memorable? - YES!! |
