START OF THE ADVENTURE - August 9, 2003 Albuquerque to Westminster, Colorado - 480 Miles |
|
Today we got started on this year's big adventure! Since our goal was to reach Edmonton, Canada in four days (about 1,800 miles), today was the longest we have planned. We started out by riding through the cattle ranch land northeast of Albuquerque. The drought in New Mexico was readily apparent in the brown of this grassland. How the cattle will get through the drought is anybody's guess. We covered most of the rest of the way on Interstate 25, from near Santa Fe to Denver. The beauty of Glorietta Pass was a welcome start, and then on to Raton, Trinidad, and Pueblo, CO. In the northern part of New Mexico, there were fairly green ranch pastures, and it was quite pretty. Going up into Colorado took us alongside the mountains where the Rockies meet the eastern plains, the lower part of the Front Range. We had a beautiful day, and the mountains were spectacular. Along the way we saw Pronghorn Antelope, so that was fun. When we approached Colorado Springs, we could see the typical afternoon rain showers ahead of us. Although we did our best to "thread the needle" between rain cells, we did get rained on quite a bit. However, it cooled everything off and felt good. We hit the "going home" traffic in Denver, and was it ever busy! We expected it, but the think we couldn't understand was the traffic going INTO Denver, both from the south and from the north, was just as heavy as the traffic going OUT of Denver. With a good start, we stayed on the north side of Denver, Westminster, CO, so that we didn't have to face the morning rush hour in Denver. |
