Deane and Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Northwest Territories & Nunavut | |
August 14 - Edmonton to Manning, Alberta - 360 Miles |
Northern Alberta is absolutely gorgeous! Norm and I rated today's ride through northern Alberta as one of the 10 most scenic days we have ever had on any of our trips in the US and Canada. This part of Alberta has rolling hills with low mountains surrounding very large rolling plains. These plains vary from very flat, huge fields, to forests so dense they seem impenetrable. Around the fields and along the roads were belts of trees, mostly birch and fir, to give a background of dark green, and crops of wheat, oats, and canola in varying shades of green to give a contrast. Because of the late start of the growing season here, the fields were very green. Many of these fields could be measured not in acres, but in hundreds of acres. Add beautiful clear blue skies, with a few little white clouds, perfect riding temperatures, and you have a perfect day. From the high rolling plain, we rode down into the town of Peace River, in the narrow valley of its river, also named Peace River, and it was a most beautiful sight from the approaching hill. On the mundane side, our motel for tonight had a washer and dryer for guest laundry, so it being the end of the 6th day out, we took advantage of it and washed everything. (Ladies take note; we do wash our clothes periodically.) On the whole, we had a very satisfying day. Tomorrow we will actually ride into Northwest Territories. |
