Deane, Alex, and Jim's Motorcycle Trip to Mexico - 2004 | |
April 19 - Monterrey to San Luis Potosi' - 325 Miles |
The adventure continues, with interesting twists. We started early, to leave Monterrey, a city of 2 million population, and beat the traffic. Well, there was a lot of traffic anyway, and as we three tried to stay together on unfamiliar expressways, Jim got separated from Deane and Alex, by getting shunted off into another expressway. He wound up in a residential area with no idea of how to get back to the expressway the other two were on. With an inspiration, he hailed a taxi just as it was letting the previous passenger out, and hired the taxi driver to lead him to the expressway. While that was an improvement, it was a similarly signed expressway running in parallel to the one Deane and Alex were on. Fortunately we got back into communication by CB radio and talked each other closer by landmarks until we joined again. Whew! - Without the CB radios on the bikes we might still be hunting one another. Next came a ride up into the mountains on our route, but in heavy fog and on unfamiliar roads. We came through all right but it was hairy for awhile. After an uneventful but scenic ride from the mountain area to San Luis Potosi', we got lost again trying to go right straight through the city while looking for a hotel. Mexican cities have lots of little narrow streets, crowded with cars and not very good signs for the traveler. Also San Luis is a town of about 1 million, so it is complex. Alex then hailed a taxi and told him we wanted a nice Mexican hotel more or less downtown. The taxi took off and we flew behind him until he did indeed get us to a nice comfortable hotel, right in the historic downtown. From the hotel it was only a few blocks to many historic churches and government buildings, with many small shops and a good restaurant for dinner. From our hotel window the view of churches was spectacular. San Luis Potosi' is indeed a very interesting city. |
