Deane and Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Labrador

Sunday, June 17    Clarendon, TX to Mena, AR - 470 Miles

Today Rick, Bob, and I rode across the entire state of Oklahoma, West to East.  It was absolutely beautiful!  We had impressions from others, to lead us to think our route across the southern part of the state would be less than desirable, but it proved exceptionally scenic.  Everything was so Green, Green, Green, especially for us guys from New Mexico.  Yes, there were the big flat fields in the far western part, but they too were beautifully green.

Then we rode through rolling hills with scattered trees and vast green pastures, with a hundred to several hundred head of cattle happily grazing in each pasture.  Some areas that were fairly heavy forested surprised us.  Finally we rode through the Ouachita National Forest, and the Winding Stairs recreation areas, with  beautiful green valleys and heavily forested hills on either side.  Yes, it was hot, high about 90o, but it wasn't too bad.

The highlight of the day was riding the "Talimena Highway", from Talihina, Oklahoma to Mena, Arkansas.  This highway is about 50 miles long, and like the "Top of the World Highway", it runs on the top of ridges so one can see miles and miles of heavily forested mountains and valleys on either side.  Yes, Oklahoma has mountains (none of us had been in the part with mountains) and they are beautiful.

This was a long day, since we rode the "back roads" through the entire route of 470 miles, but we all agreed it was worth the extra time to have such a scenic ride.
