March 31 - Mount Gambier - Adelaide, South Australia 464 km (288 Miles) |

After the coastal wind we had yesterday, we were happy to ride somewhat inland today. The wind didn't materialize, so we had a good riding day. Overcast skies and small patches of rain made us keep the warm clothes on. At one point, we went through the little historic settlement of Coorong, where early pioneers made a business of gathering salt from the shores of shallow bays. They hauled it by wagon for long distances, from their homes in the middle of nowhere. After arriving in Adelaide, we took an electric commuter train down into the center of the city. We arrived after quitting time for people down town, and on a Saturday evening, the center of Adelaide is completely shut down. An Australian man whom we met along in our riding day had told us that Adelaide was a very "quiet" city after business hours, and we surely found that to be true of the down town anyway. We're building our mileage per day toward crossing the "Outback" within the next few days. Here we will make quite a transition from curvy roads and cool temperatures (a nearly constant all day temperature of about 58-62 degrees F near the coast) to straighter roads, warmer temperatures, and who knows what kind of animal life. Whatever comes it will be interesting. |
