Deane & Jack's Motorcycle Trip in

Australia and New Zealand

March 19 & 20 - In & around Sydney, New South Wales

0 Miles - Bikes stayed at motel

We went to the big city today - Sydney - and rode the commuter train to get from our motel in one of the suburbs to the down town.  We had asked our travel agent to get us a motel near one of the train stations, and they did - about a block away!  (We didn't really want to ride the motorcycles into the middle of the big city.)

First we took photos of each other with the Sydney bridge (the "Coathanger Bridge") in the background.

Next came the harbor tour, with wonderful views of many of Sydney's buildings.

Then of course we had to take pictures of the Sydney Opera House - from the harbor tour boat - and then Deane took a tour of the inside.  (Jack had been here one time before and had taken the tour then.)

I hadn't realized just how long it has been since the Danish architect won the competition for the design and the project started.  That was in 1958.  The project was to take 4 years and cost $7 million.  14 years later and $117 million, the opera house was finally finished!!  To pay for this huge cost, Sydney had a lottery, and did indeed pay for the construction that way!

On the second day in and around Sydney, we explored the down town area again and wound up our day seeing the Sydney Aquarium .  It is a really good one, with a glass "tunnel" to walk through to see the fish better. - Quite a different perspective.
