Deane & Jack's Motorcycle Trip in

Australia and New Zealand

April 5 - Yulara to Alice Springs, Northern Territory

459 km (285 Miles)

Today we just pretty much put our heads into the wind and rode as quickly as we could, to get to Alice Springs, with the need to replace the worn chain on Deane's V-Strom motorcycle. Alice Springs was already on our itinerary so getting there was necessary anyway.

Yesterday we called and made a reservation in the Desert Edge motorcycle shop in Alice Springs, to bring in the motorcycle and get a new chain put on.  We needed to be at the shop by 3 PM, or they could not get the repair done, so we had a very specific target.

We made it, with time to spare, and the mechanic put on the new chain in a very short time.  Thank goodness for that, since our longest days are just around the corner.

We hadn't realized that Alice Springs was as large a town as it is.  Just to drive across it in getting to the motorcycle shop took 5 km or so.  We have been told that the population is about 30,000 but we haven't confirmed that.

As we checked into our motel, we noticed a sign for "Food for Wallabies".  It turns out that this motel property is right next to a rocky park which has Wallabies in the wild, and the Wallabies come down off their rocky "range" at just before sunset to see if there is anything to eat.

So we bought food (pellets) and fed them.  What a lot of fun!!

These are "Rock" Wallabies, and I could see several differences between these and ones we saw and fed on Tasmania.  Their front paws were wider and more "meaty", and their claws were sturdier.  Then their tail is longer and slimmer than the ones on Tasmania.

Now for a cute shot.  Look who is peaking out of the mother's pouch, as Jack feeds the mother.

Every day has something different and FUN!!
