Deane and Norm's 2011 Motorcycle Tour Riding in Alaska - Again! |

Overview August 2011 |
|
Deane and Norm have gotten together almost every year in the past 10 years for a "long ride" together. As well as riding all over the United States, we've ridden all over Canada and all over Alaska. This year we wanted to go back to Alaska, for the third time! In past years we've ridden to Alaska and back home twice, about 11,000 miles and six weeks each trip, and enjoyed every mile of riding in Alaska itself. However, this time we didn't want to spend the time and miles to ride to get to Alaska itself, so we decided that we would fly to Alaska and rent motorcycles to ride within the beautiful state. Knowing that availability of motorcycles to rent in Alaska in the summer might be tight, Deane made motorcycle reservations in November, nine months ahead of time, for rental motorcycles in August 2011. We found good motorcycle renters in Keith and Nancy Hull, owners of "Alaska Motorcycle Adventures". The motorcycles we are renting are BMW's F650GS (800cc in-line twins) which are "dual sport" types that are capable on either paved or dirt and gravel roads. We flew into Anchorage, and spent 10 days motorcycle riding to places we enjoyed the last times as well as search out new and interesting places to visit this time. Because we like the city of Anchorage, we spent two days in and around Anchorage and vicinity, while renting a car. With rental of the motorcycles for 10 days, the overall time in Alaska was 12 days. |
