Deane & Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Alaska

July 31 - Prince Rupert, BC to Smithers, BC - 200 miles

With the ferry stopping at the several port towns yesterday getting to Prince Rupert, we saw the beauty of the settings of these towns.

Mountains, glaciers, harbors, and Inside Passage seaway were all beautiful, even though the sky was overcast much of the time.

We arrived in Prince Rupert at about 2:30 AM this morning, and we went to get the motorcycles in the ferry vehicle deck.  It was raining cats and dogs outside the ship.  So, on with the riding suits, plus the rain suits, best rain gloves, and so on.

What we had forgotten was that we had to go through Canadian Customs, since we were going from Alaska, at our boarding town of Skagway, to Prince Rupert, in BC, Canada.  Well, we had to wait in line with all of the other vehicles to clear customs, so we sat on our motorcycles in the steady downpour for nearly 30 minutes.  Luckily, when we cleared, our GWRRA friend Jeannie Fisher was waiting to guide us to David's and her house and let us two nearly drowned rats dry out and resume our night of sleep.

Yes the ferry was fun, but after almost three days of being on board, we are glad to be on the motorcycles again.

On the road again, it's good to be on the road again!

We had planned just a short ride today because of unknowns of the ferry, and we were glad we didn't have longer to ride.  However, it was beautiful going through the coastal mountains and along beautiful rivers.  Each day we think we've already seen such beautiful places that they can't be outdone, and each day we see more beautiful areas.

Temperature wise, today was a "scorcher".  The high temperature got up to 75o F!!  And we rode in the sun for so long that Norm complained that he just wasn't used to three straight hours of sun!  We hadn't seen this high a temperature since we rode into Canada from Montana, three weeks ago.

On the Wildlife Report, we saw a cute young Black Bear today (yes, he was a black Black Bear).  He just trotted across the road in front of us so that we could get a good view of him.
