Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska | |
September 28, Beaver, UT to Tuba City, Arizona - 277 Miles |
Today has been a very scenic day, particularly with the "red rock" areas of Utah and Arizona. First we visited the "Cedar Breaks National Monument", near Zion national Park in Utah. This is an area at 10,000 ft. elevation where red sandstone mountains have washed away over the eons, and the mountains around them are now covered with Cedar trees / bushes. Interestingly, many of the trees at the 9,000 to 10,000 ft. elevation were very much like the trees in Alaska, skinny but taller. Deane wanted Norm and Kay to see this area, which he had discovered on a previous trip. Getting up to this elevation requires quite a steep road, and it was a challenge to Kay, in getting the motor home and trailer up there. There were a couple of places that signs warned of 13% grades - pretty steep, but Kay said that wasn't as steep as some places on the "Dalton Highway" on the way to Prudhoe Bay. The ride up to the mountain top went through a nice ski area, Brian Head, with lots of Fall Color. Many of the leaves here were of an orange color, and we did see some reds. We have followed Fall Color for more than 6,000 miles on this trip!! Can you believe that? It started when we were close to Dawson City in the Yukon, as we started up the "Dempster Highway". From there all the way through the Yukon, Alaska, Canada, and the U. S. we have followed the Fall Color as it turned, further south and lower in elevation! What a wonderful addition to an already scenic trip. This afternoon we came into Tuba City, on the Navajo Reservation, just in time to have a thunderstorm of the nature that dry areas in the Southwest just wait for, and here we sit, in our snug little RV. We only have about 350 miles to ride and drive tomorrow, to arrive at Deane's home in Albuquerque. It looks like one more day will do it! |
