British Columbia continues to be absolutely beautiful, particularly with the changing Fall colors. We are now running south, down long broad valleys, with some cattle ranches and grazing land, bordered on both sides with forests of Pines, Aspen, Birch, and Spruce. Then dotted along are medium size lakes, as well as some very large and very long lakes. One town we went through, called Williams Lake, had beautiful lake lots for many houses, from cabins to very large homes, on this many mile long lake. It is interesting that this highway runs very much along the trading route used by the gold seekers trying to reach an area of BC called the "Cariboo Area" (yes, "Cariboo", not Caribou). At that time, in the 1860's, some smart merchants set up a provisioning business in Lillooet, BC, apparently close to either a west coast landing or maybe close enough to Vancouver, and then arranged to have "Road Houses" along the route of the gold seekers. These were designated "50 Mile House", "100 Mile House", "150 Miles House", etc, at about 12-15 mile spacing. These designations are now turned into town names, like the town named "100 Mile House". Businesses have gotten on the bandwagon, by naming their businesses "99 Mile Motel", "84 Mile Restaurant", etc. At least this tells you something, once you know where "Mile 0" is - Lillooet. We did hit some nasty road construction, particularly in that they were using a "pavement grinder" which left grooves big enough to make the motorcycle handling pretty scary. But we kept the "shiny side up", and had a good day. |
