Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska | |
September 21, Hyder, Alaska to Fraser Lake, BC - 350 Miles |
A whole day of riding and driving on good roads - Wow! Yes, excellent road surfaces for 350 miles!! After our last three weeks of every kind of bad roads you can imagine, this was wonderful. We got up to heavy rain noisily pounding the top of the motor home, and there was a temptation to stay inside all day. But, we had to move on, and the temperature wasn't bad, 46o F - a heat wave! Deane and Norm have formed the principle that if you get up to bad weather, you just go ahead and ride, because the weather will at least be different ,and probably better, during some of the day's ride and at your destination. That was indeed true today. Getting back into Canada, the first 40 miles were on wet roads with rain fairly heavy, but the road surface was excellent and the scenery beautiful. On this first stretch, we saw glaciers, snow capped mountains, high, beautiful waterfalls, and again the fall colors. One glacier had small ice berg type of ice calved off and floating in the lake, and the glacier had the characteristic blue tinge of the compressed ice. The rain slacked off, and we rode the Cassiar Highway (Hwy 37) south until we reached the "Yellowhead Highway". (The Yellowhead Highway (Hwy 16) is the major highway from Prince Rupert on the west coast to Edmonton in the interior.) There we turned east, toward Prince George. The scenery in British Columbia was beautiful also. There were many snow capped mountains, with dark green Spruce and fall colors of the other trees. One particular mountain area had a glacier way up high, between two mountain peaks. During the afternoon, we took off some of the layers of clothes, as it was becoming quite warm - quite different for us. Interestingly enough, the fall colors were more advanced, past their peak, than we had seen farther north. Also the type of Black Spruce growing was much like that much farther north. We must have gone through a part of British Columbia which has very cold winter weather. All in all, this was a fun and very scenic day. |
