Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska

September 15,

Glennallen, Alaska to Beaver Creek, Yukon Territories

248 Miles

We're in Canada again!

And it's time to go South!!

Brrrrr - This morning the southern Alaska temperatures matched the northern Alaska temperatures we have experienced in the last two weeks.  It was 24o F when we got  up, about 28o F when we started riding, went way up to about 37o F by Noon, and stayed in the range 36o to 39o F for the rest of the day!  And, when there is snow on the side of the roads, you know for sure its time for motorcycles to go south.

Still, the scenery was beautiful again, with this area experiencing the peak of the Fall Color again.  At this time of the year we just can't praise the Alaskan landscape enough - it's totally, absolutely beautiful!!

The yellows and golds of the Birches, interspersed with the dark green of the Spruces is just spectacular on the hillsides, and today with snow on top of the mountains (some from longstanding snow pack and some from a snow shower two nights ago), it is a wonderful scene at every vantage point.  These are mountains along the Wrangle mountain chain, between Anchorage and Glennallen.

Along the way, there are very pretty little and big lakes, and the interesting "braided rivers".

We crossed the Canadian border just before the little town of Beaver Creek where we are staying.

As we ate dinner, it started to snow, so we will have to see tomorrow morning just how it is for motorcycles.

Today we passed through two major construction sites, with each one having a "pilot car" to guide us through.  The second of these was very muddy and soft, so it presented quite a challenge to getting the Gold Wings through.  However, we both managed to keep the bikes upright, although they got muddy in the process.

Kay has done very well with the motor home and trailer, and provided warm stops when the guys got too cold to ride.  That is pretty important in these temperatures.  Deane had Diane mail his electrically heated vest and electrically heated gloves to Boise, so he could bring them back as he flew to Anchorage.  What a help these are!!
