Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska | |

September 14, Anchorage to Glennallen, AK - 190 Miles |

Retrieving Deane's Gold Wing from its storage place, finishing visiting with friends, and small errands gave us a late start, but we had anticipated that. But first - about the Moose. Last night as we were driving home from the airport, having picked up Deane, we came too close for comfort with a moose. We had just turned into a residential area in Anchorage, and saw this big four legged animal in the road. We all thought at first that it was a horse, but then with the car lights on it, it was obvious it was a big bull moose. There was a second moose just off the road, happily eating grass in the dark. I guess this is not uncommon in Anchorage, but quite a treat for us. Today's ride was one of the most scenic we have taken in the hole trip. We rode up the "Matanuska" valley, along the Matanuska River, then near the Matanuska Glacier. We had an ideal combination of Fall Color, snow capped mountains, and a very large glacier that comes close to the road. Add a beautiful lake to the Fall Colors and mountains, and this is one of the prettiest drives we have made. This is an area where glaciers snake through mountain valleys, broadening out as they reach this particular valley. We were lucky to have just the right sunlit end of the glacier called Matanuska. Glaciers are actually quite dirty when they reach the terminating point, because of the dirt and rocks picked up along the way. So, to see the sun shining on the very white terminus of this one was a real treat. Well, we are on the way home now, having gone as far north as we could. We'll wend our way out of Alaska, into British Columbia, and down into the U.S., seeing what new sights await us. |
