Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska

August 23, Fort Liard, NWT to Liard Hot Springs,                     British Columbia - 295 Miles

Well, that Black Bear sure did come to our camp site.  Norm opened the motor home door early in the morning, and the bear was right at the picnic table, but took off into the woods.  Deane kidded Norm that the bear had been sitting at the picnic table with his knife and fork, waiting patiently for his breakfast of bacon & eggs, and pancakes, and here Norm scared him off!

Upon starting down the remaining portion of the "Liard Trail", we found that it wasn't paved, and was just as bad as the day before, as far as "loose gravel" was concerned.  In addition there was a very long and difficult construction area.  This was much worse, in that they were spreading a three inch blanket of crushed rock and dirt on the road, in preparation for future paving.  That thick soft stuff was very hard to ride a motorcycle in!!

Norm almost went down, but saved it, and we persevered until we finally hit our goal, the "Alaska Highway", in British Columbia.

The scenery as we came onto the Alaska Highway was absolutely magnificent!  Whereas for the last five days we had been traveling in the "Muskeg" and the "Bush" of relatively flat or rolling hills, with short, skinny trees, the trees here were tall and the mountains were soaring solid rocks with fir and spruce trees at their skirts.

There were big rivers and lakes and heavy forestation.  We had come into a wonderful mountain range with snow on the tops within the last few days - that's right snow in August!

For the wildlife report, today was a great day, as in addition to the campsite bear, we saw 25 Caribou, six "Stone Mountain Sheep" (they look like Rocky Mountain Goats, except they are sheep), and one more Black Bear.  The Caribou sightings were spread out over about a 50 mile stretch, with groups of 2,3, and 4 here and there, and the sheep over about a 30 mile range.

After a hard several days, we ended today with a soak in the Liard Hot Springs - how relaxing!
