Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska

August 17, Hinton, AB to Grimshaw, AB

As we left our campground, we saw a small Black Bear, just walking across the campground road.  When  he saw us, he loped away into the forest.

Later, since we had started fairly early, Norm saw a herd of about twenty deer up in a clearing beyond the trees cleared for the road.  We have already seen more deer in the first few days in Canada this time than we saw in our whole Canada - Alaska trip four years ago.

The valleys and mountains are very large in this general area.  One thing we see a lot of in Canada is the "Braided" rivers.  These are caused by small channels which meander all over the river's width.  Some of them carry a lot of water.

We rode through the "Peace River" valley and marveled at the size of this huge river, as well as the valley it runs in.  This comes from glaciers carving out the large valleys, as well as the water melt coming from the glaciers of the last Ice Age.

Grimshaw is an exploding growth town, caused by an oil boom in this area.  Many, many very large homes were being built in several large developments.  Norm commented that this was like West Texas in the last oil boom in the U.S.
