Deane, Norm, and Kay's Motorcycle / RV Trip to Northern Canada and Alaska | |
August 15, West Glacier, MT to Canmore, Alberta - 345 Miles |
The day started slowly, as we checked out of the RV park and the "Yurt", and said goodbye to Dave. Then it was only about 75 miles to the Canadian border, with good rocky mountain scenery. Those Montana mountains along the Continental Divide are very, very rugged, but the valleys are well irrigated and make good green pastures. We were apprehensive about getting across the Canadian border, with concerns about added security. Deane and Norm with the two motorcycles had no trouble at all, and after Kay answered the standard questions, the border agent asked her if she was with the two motorcycles. When she said yes, the agent sent her on her way. We rode first up into British Columbia, and then crossed the BC - Alberta border by going up and across "Crow's Nest Pass" on the Continental Divide. The mountain scenery continued to be gorgeous, and soon we were headed North to take Highway 40 that Deane and Norm had taken the last time they went to Alaska. The temperature was falling as we went along, so we had to stop and put on another layer of clothes, with the thought that we might have to add rain clothes. That highway has just stunning scenery, with beautifully forested skirts on the mountains and very rugged and rocky mountain tops. The best part came in seeing wild animals along this highway. These included a mother Black Bear with two cubs, one Mountain Sheep, about 20 deer in a herd, and a magnificent buck white-tailed deer who came strutting up to the highway, thought better of crossing in front of the motorcycles, and retreated haughtily back to the edge of the trees. It started raining as we approached the end of this road, so we stopped, put on the rain gear, and kept going. It was still raining when we found an RV park in one of the Canadian Provincial Parks, but we got set up and were quickly and well fed with the left-over delicious casserole that Kay had fixed the night before last. The rain prevented taking pictures, but hopefully the above description will make you interested in visiting this beautiful area. |
