Deane's 2009 Motorcycle Trip South Africa |

Nov 20 - Knysna - Oudtshoorn Day 14 - 200Km (124) Miles |
|
This was a day of not too many miles, but one to see several South African attractions. First we stopped at a game preserve to see Crocodiles. We did indeed see some very large ones - maybe 15 feet long at least, with big enough bodies to swallow a person. Then there were some of the Big Cats which they had in a breeding program, as the number of Big Cats in Africa and in the world keeps going down. Some of theirs were several Cheetahs, some White Lions, a white tiger, and a regular orange tiger. We also got to see some "Meercats", those funny little guys who star on "Meercat Manor" on TV. Then we stopped at the "Conga Caves", which is about like Carlsbad Caverns, but somewhat smaller - interesting anyway. The next stop was at an Ostrich farm. This had a number of Ostriches, maybe 20 at least. After the guide couldn't raise a volunteer among us, one of their staff, a wiry little guy, grabbed on to an ostrich and rode and raced him around the pen. That guy won the race, hands down. To show how strong the ostrich eggs are, the guides had us stand on several eggs. None broke. |
