Nov 17, Coffee Bay to Port Alfred Day
11 - 450Km (280) Miles |

This was mostly a high speed run to get from place to another. Port Alfred is a small resort on the ocean side, and was pleasant. However, on the way, I took some photos of the small houses (or huts) of the local people. The photo below shows a hut that almost every household had, in a round shape with woven reeds for a roof. A large percentage of these were painted turquoise. We didn't find out why they had so many round huts, all about the same dimensions, and so many painted turquoise. I think it must have ties to some religious things among the people, since there are so many of them and all painted turquoise. Here is a view of a few of the huts.
These people live all over very steep mountains. The following shot shows this. (Not a very good photo, but you can see by the white dots as houses how wide spread they are.)
The landscape in between was again tree farms. The amount of tree farms, always pines or Gum trees, is amazing. There must be millions of acres of planted trees in various stages of growth. It appears that the trees are harvested when their height is about 125 ft. or so. Not many have been harvested yet, but there are lots of them in the making. |
